Panama
Viejo ("Old Panama"),
founded in 1519, was the
first European city established
on the Pacific Coast of
the Americas and was Pizarro's
staging area for his attack
on the Incas. Destroyed
by the gold-seeking English
pirate Henry Morgan in the
late 1600s, the city was
rebuilt a few years later
on a more defensible peninsula
and Casco Viejo ("Old
Crown") was born. The
modern, cosmopolitan areas
of Panama City add yet a
third dimension to this
history-steeped city.
Architectural structures
in various states of repair
survive from Panama City's
turbulent past and offer
afternoons of sightseeing
among old brick, iron grillwork,
and Baroque facades.
Coexisting with the gleaming
skyscrapers ,Panama City
owes much of its cosmopolitan
and international flavor
to the Panama Canal, the
giant ditch that brings
the world to the isthmus.

Historic
Tour “Portobelo” |
|
 |
When
the Spanish colonies were
at its prime and the conquest
of the Inca Empire was accomplished,
the Spaniards set their
eyes in strategic sites
of Panama to transfer their
cargos from coast to coast.
Portobelo was the end of
the Royal Road (Camino Real),
path between the oceans
that started in the Old
Panama City. Old Spanish
galleons unloaded their
treasures, transferred them
across the Isthmus, and
finally loaded the vessels
waiting in Portobelo, in
order to transfer them back
to the Old World.
This activity became very
attractive to Pirates and
Buccaneers, forcing the
Spanish conquerors to build
forts for protection and
customs. Nevertheless, all
this was strategically planned,
Sir Francis Drake, a British
Buccaneer, who sacked and
destroyed Portobelo where
he was later killed in a
battle. His body remains
in a lead coffin in the
bottom of the ocean in Portobelo
Bay.
This day you have an appointment
with History.

| It
is very hard to put a name
to an experience such as
being on board the trans-isthmian
train. It is an exotic cocktail
of experiences and history
in one. Imagine traveling
through the rails of the
first intercontinental train
in the world, running parallel
to what is known as the
eighth wonder of the world:
The Panama Canal. Combine
luxury and glamour on board
with extraordinary beautiful
flora and fauna views along
the Rainforest. This is
just an idea of what it
is like to travel from one
ocean to another in one
hour. |
